What Surprised an Australian in Bali

On a quiet beach in Nusa Dua, we met a young man from Australia. It was his first time in Bali. He had been here for a week. He had just finished swimming and was sitting down, taking it easy because of a slight headache.
Still, he was open to talk.
And what he said was simple but honest.
“It’s been pretty mixed, to be honest.”
When we asked him to rate his Bali experience from 1 to 10, he didn’t say 10.
He said:
“Places like this are like a 9… and then places like Denpasar are like a 3.”
For locals, Denpasar may feel normal busy, crowded, part of everyday life. But for him, the contrast was strong.
And that’s the reality of Bali.
Bali is not one color. Bali is contrast.
He Prefers the Nature Side
When asked what he likes most about Bali infrastructure or nature he answered clearly :
“The thing that I prefer the most is probably the nature side of things.”
The beach. The scenery. The relaxed atmosphere. That’s what stood out to him.
Sometimes, as locals, we forget how valuable these everyday views really are.
About the Busy Side of Bali
He was also honest about something less comfortable.
“You get a lot of people asking you for money… it’s a bit overwhelming.”
But he didn’t stop there. He added:
“I don’t blame them… they’re in poverty. It’s business.”
There was annoyance but also empathy.
That’s important.
He didn’t just see Bali as a postcard. He saw the human side too.
And Yet… He Would Come Back
Even with “mixed” experiences, he said something meaningful :
“It’s just such a beautiful place.”
That matters.
Bali doesn’t have to be perfect to be loved. It doesn’t have to be 10/10 everywhere to leave an impact.
It has ups and downs. And that makes it real.
What This Means for Us as Locals
From one Australian visitor, we learn something valuable:
People don’t come only for luxury.
Nature remains Bali’s strongest magnet.
Experiences depend on where they choose to go.
Even a “mixed” experience can still end with, “I’ll come back.”
Bali is for everyone.
For nature lovers. For families. For explorers. For first-timers. For those who return again and again.
Bali is not something to be afraid of.
It’s something to understand and to guide well.
Maybe our role as locals is simple:
Help visitors discover more 9s, and fewer 3s.
Because Bali is not just a destination.
It’s an experience.
